Lanquais Castle

The Lanquais Castle is located in the Dordogne department of the French Périgord near the village of Lanquais .

An alley of elms leads through the park to the entrance gate of the property. The building is stylistically divided into two parts. The round tower including the rest of the wing and a stair tower at the eastern end of the building is medieval . The temporal affiliation can be seen in the battlement and the machicolation of this part. A renaissance building erected during the wars of religion in the late 16th century adjoins it without any transition . It is equipped with characteristic windows, portholes, frames and gables. For this building, the client had taken the Paris Louvre as a model. The abrupt change in the architectural style, similar to that in Brissac Castle on the Loire , reveals the usual practice of redesigning old buildings "piece by piece".

The renovation of the Lanquais Castle is attributable to Galhiot de La Tour, liege lord of Limeuil and captain of the king. He was related to the Medici, and his sister, Isabelle de Limeuil, was part of a group of noble spy women who, on behalf of Queen Mother Catherine de Medici, hunted down high-ranking Huguenots . In this context, Lanquais Castle formed the Catholic counterpart to the nearby Protestant stronghold of Bergerac . Isabelle got unwanted pregnant while spying and corrected the misstep by marrying the royal banker Sardini. At the same time, however, she had to endure the siege of the family castle by the Calvinist converted Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne in 1577 . The bullet holes can still be seen on the facade today. The besiegers became heir to Lanquais eleven years later.

The furniture from the 18th century and a large castle kitchen are noteworthy.
