The Melans Castle is a raised hide in the municipality Absam in District Innsbruck-Land in Tirol (Melans 1). The building, which dates back to the Middle Ages, is a listed building .

history

The residence is mentioned around 1300 as a fiefdom of the bishopric of Augsburg , in 1315 Chunrad the Vegler and his brother Eberlein, sons of the salt marshal Eberhardt Vegler, are named as owners. Around 1400 Melans belonged to the Lienhard Rutzenlacher. In 1413 the residence was destroyed, sold and rebuilt by Bavarian troops. For a short time (from 1450) it was owned by Duke Sigismund the Rich in Coin , who then gave it to the Fieger family in Hall around 1455 in pledge; this also built the Neumelans residence in South Tyrol and named it after the older seat. Between 1535 and 1660 the castle was owned by Zott von Perneg . In 1537 Melans received lower jurisdiction over this region, which was only given to the Hall district court in 1830. In 1815 the castle came into the possession of Felix Adam von Riccabona, since then it has been owned by the Riccabona von Reichenfels family .

The building was destroyed by an earthquake in 1689 and rebuilt in 1700; major renovations were carried out in the 19th century and most recently in 1980.

description

chapel

The complex consists of the manor house with chapel in the west, the former farm building in the north, an outbuilding in the east and the former orangery in the south, which enclose an approximately square inner courtyard. The low battlement wall that partially surrounds the complex dates from the 19th century.

The core of the manor house dates from the Middle Ages and was rebuilt around 1700 and 1890. The two-storey building with a square floor plan and five window axes each is covered with a hipped roof.

The chapel, consecrated in 1516, had to be re-consecrated after the two earthquakes in 1670 and 1689 and was redesigned in a neo-Gothic style in 1890 . The chapel has a gable and has a star vault inside. The baroque altar painting depicts the Assumption of Mary . In the 19th century a two-storey neo-Gothic arcade was laid out on the northeast side , supported by pillars at the bottom and columns at the top, and bordered by a parapet with a tracery frieze .

In the 19th century, the gardens south and south-west of the mansion, which were laid out several times, were redesigned. In the southern part of the garden there is a wayside cross with a fountain. It is structured with low box hedges . To the southwest is a viewing platform called Bellevue from the first half of the 19th century. The eastern garden area was designed with a forest before 1847. A memorial stone was erected in 1836 to restore the castle by Felix Riccabona.
