Neu-Richmond was a complex of several buildings in the neo-Gothic style and a park on Wolfenbütteler Strasse in the south of Braunschweig . The facility was built at the beginning of the 19th century based on plans by Carl Theodor Ottmer (1800–1843) north of Old Richmond . The oldest building was the New Richmond Castle , which was also known as the Ducal Villa. The ducal villa and the cavalier house were demolished at the beginning of the 20th century due to disrepair. The last ancillary facilities were demolished in the middle of the 20th century. Today, the Braunschweig-Kolleg is located in its place . Although nothing of the original park has been preserved and there is no longer a network of paths, the former park is a listed building. There are currently no planned activities to restore the park.

history

The Neu-Richmond complex had Duke Wilhelm von Braunschweig (1806-1884) built for himself.

The ducal villa was built in 1833. Carl Theodor Ottmer described the building as the "Ducal pleasure palace Richmond-Castle" after completion. A model by Ottmer shows that an even larger extension was planned for the villa. However, this was never realized. The villa that had already been built was only about a third of the planned New Richmond Castle. The finished part was built based on the model of a garden shed on Putney Bridge in London, the remaining part was invented by Ottmer. In the Duke's castle, there was a living room with yellow wallpaper and a library room with green wallpaper as well as a dining room with mahogany wood on the ceilings and walls and a billiard room. Upstairs there were three living rooms, a bedroom and several cloakroom rooms. The basement consisted of a kitchen, utility rooms and cellar rooms.

A few years later, the Williamscastle was built away from the ducal villa, for which the name Kavalierhaus later became established, which shows that Duke Wilhelm's circle of friends often stayed there. The castle administrator's apartment was also located there. Williamscastle was more simply furnished on the inside than the Ducal Villa, but architecturally it was more elaborate on the outside. Williamscastle consisted of a west building, an east building and a connecting building and had a prominent tower.

The complex also had two entrance gates, which were decorated with turrets and coats of arms, as well as a guard house with an archway and a tower. Whenever the Duke was present, a flag was hoisted on the tower of the guard house. The park was surrounded by a crenellated wall.

In the course of the construction of New Richmond, the Oker below the park was expanded to become a kennel pond and a small canal with a jetty was built. Since 1870, the park in the north has been permanently impaired by the high embankment of the Braunschweig-Helmstedt railway line. The Duke's interest in the buildings, which had been declining since 1848, ultimately led to their abandonment in 1901.

In the winter of 1906, New Richmond was demolished.
