The Small Castle in Wolfenbüttel , also known as Bevernsches Schloss , is a baroque building that is located directly next to Wolfenbüttel Castle on the Schlossplatz there. The construction of the building dates back to 1643. Over the centuries, it has been expanded, rebuilt and reduced in size several times. The two-storey half - timbered building with mezzanine that still exists today dates back to 1730 and consists of the original west wing of the small castle. It essentially got its present shape around 1830.

history

In the 17th century, the small castle was primarily the residence of the hereditary princes of Braunschweig and Lüneburg. From 1687 to 1712 it housed the knight academy founded by Duke Anton Ulrich for the sons of noble families, the Rudolph-Antoniana .

The building was named Bevernsches Schloss because it served as residence for Duke Ferdinand Albrecht II of Braunschweig-Bevern from 1723 to 1735. His children, including Elisabeth Christine , the wife of Frederick II of Prussia, grew up there. On June 15, 1733, the celebration of the double wedding of the Hereditary Prince Karl - later Karl I - with Princess Philippine Charlotte of Prussia and the Crown Prince Friedrich of Prussia with Princess Elisabeth Christine took place in the Empire-style ballroom of the Small Palace .

After the ducal court moved to Braunschweig , the small castle was sold to the ducal minister Droste Raeber von Rodenberg in 1791. Since then it has been a private residence.

The Unger family acquired the building around 1830 and had it completely redesigned. With the exception of a wing built in 1730 , all buildings were demolished. The remaining part of the building received a new facade and thus essentially its current appearance.

After the banker Gustav Seeliger bought the Small Castle in 1869, he had a castle park laid out in the English landscape style . There is still a ginkgo planted at the time in the back of the garden - and a black walnut tree .
