Castle Oława ( Polish Zamek Piastowski w Oławie ) is a castle in the center of Oława ( Oława ), in the province of Lower Silesia in Poland. Historically, the castle served as the residence of the Dukes of Ohlau .

history

Ludwig I of Brieg and Liegnitz had a castle built between 1359 and 1398 with a presumably trapezoidal courtyard. Two gate towers each led south into the city and north out of town. After damage, Bernhard Niuron had the castle expanded into a Renaissance castle in 1558 .

Carlo Rossi and possibly Lucca Giovanni rebuilt the castle on behalf of Duke Christian von Wohlau and his widow from 1659 to 1680. After the death of the last Silesian Piast Georg Wilhelm I (Liegnitz-Brieg-Wohlau) Georg Wilhelm I , his partial principalities Liegnitz, Brieg, Wohlau and Ohlau fell to the Crown of Bohemia by reversion . From 1697 to 1737 the Ohlau Castle was the residence of the Polish-Lithuanian pretender Jakob Sobieski . He was a brother-in-law of Emperor Leopold I , who pledged the Ohlau Castle to him in his capacity as King of Bohemia . After that, the castle was neglected and converted into offices and stores.

As a result of the Second World War , the castle was damaged and restored in the now Polish Lower Silesia from 1952 to 1958 to accommodate an administration.

Building

The well-preserved southern main building comes from the Baroque period . The northern gate tower and its adjoining walls date from the Gothic period.
