First mentions (1115–1237)

Wiprecht von Groitzsch (1115)
There is no evidence of a fabulous mention from the year 1115, in which Count Wiprecht von Groitzsch is said to have tried to conquer the moated castle Castrum Sneuditz .

Bodo and Otto von Sneuditz (1237)
Probably around 1237 the castle was built here in the marshland of the Mulde as a moated castle . Bodo and Otto von Sneuditz (today Schnaditz) are mentioned in a document as "milites, dicti de Sneuditz" (Knights of Sneuditz), later here as Messrs. Albrecht von Oechlitz and Heinrich von Bünau .

Castle owner (1349–1940)

Otto Wendis de Ilburg (1349)
In 1349 the Castrum Sneuditz belonged to the wife of Otto Wendis de Ilburg ( Eilenburg ).

Nickel von Rabil (1455)
In 1455, Nickel von Rabil , since 1451 also Mr. von Pouch , is mentioned as the owner of Schnaditz.

Gunter von Zeschwitz (1463)
For the longest time (1463–1655) the family members of the von Zaschnitz lived there , also related to the Steuben family through marriage.

In 1463 Gunter von Zeschwitz (Zaschnitz) was enfeoffed with Schnaditz. After the destruction by the Hussites and the Saxon fratricidal war , the reconstruction began.

Tietzen von Zaschnitz (1466)
Tietzen von Zaschnitz , son of Gunter von Zaschnitz, undertook numerous renovations and new constructions at the castle as a tenant.

Gunter von Zaschnitz (1515)
Gunter von Zaschnitz , son of Tietzen von Zaschnitz, became a tenant of Schnaditz in 1515 and began to reclaim the floodplain. The Junker is known as an adversary of the Berlin merchant Hans Kohlhase in the "Kohlhas'schen Handel" 1532–1540. In 1532 he stole the horses of the dealer Hans Kohlhaase in Wellaune (at that time a Vorwerk of Schnaditz). The case later became the template for the novella " Michael Kohlhaas " by Heinrich von Kleist . The Zaschnitz family remained owners of the manor and feudal lords of other villages until 1655.

Ludwig von Wuthenau (1655)
Immediately after the purchase in 1655, Ludwig von Wuthenau carried out extensive construction work on the castle, which had run down during the Thirty Years' War .

The von Bülow family (1659)
In 1659 the von Bülow family acquired the manor.

Christoph Otto von Steuben (1678)
Christoph Otto von Steuben bought Schnaditz Castle in 1678 from the community of heirs of the von Bülow family . He leased the original Gerbstedt and Friedeburg estates, moved his residence to Schnaditz and became the new heir and court
lord there. He took over the acquired property, which in addition to a brickworks also included a brewery and a grain distillery, on July 17, 1678 with a solemn ceremony.

Christoph Liborius von Steuben (1686) In
1686 Christoph Liborius von Steuben , son of Christoph Otto von Steuben, inherited the castle. The associated Schnaditz church was renovated and partially rebuilt in 1717.

Widow of Christoph Liborius von Steuben (1738)
After the death of Christoph Liborius in 1738, the castle and the manor belonging to it passed to his widow. The estate is said to have been in debt as early as 1755. At the request of the widow, the castle and manor including the lands of 1300 acres were sequestered (compulsorily administered) and initially placed under the administration of the office in Düben and auctioned in 1764.

Dorothea Maria Justina Baroness von Görtz (1764) In
1764 Dorothea Maria Justina Baroness von Görtz bought it .

Caroline Wilhelmine von Einsiedel zu Schönfeld and Badria (1789) In
1789 it was taken over by Caroline Wilhelmine von Einsiedel zu Schönfeld and Badria .

Christoph Manuel Martin (1792) In
1792 it became the property of the Saxon commissioner Christoph Manuel Martin , who redesigned the 10 hectare park based on the model of the famous Wörlitz Castle Park (near Dessau ). Until 1940 the estate remained in the possession of the heirs Martin , then Freytag , later Martini .

Period of National Socialism (1940–1945)

Dr. Erich Wendenburg (1940)
In 1940, Dr. Erich Wendenburg bought the manor, threatened with bankruptcy, which at that time comprised 650 hectares. The martinis continued to live in the castle. Walter Martini's brother-in-law was Major General Hans Oster . Walter Martini, a son of the penultimate owner, was married to Marie Oster, a sister of Major General Hans Oster, who often stayed at the castle.

He was Chief of Defense in the Wehrmacht High Command and, as a leading member of the military resistance group, was a co-conspirator of Carl Friedrich Goerdeler and Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg in the unsuccessful assassination attempt on July 20, 1944 against Adolf Hitler . After the attack failed, Hans Oster was arrested on July 21, 1944 in Schnaditz and murdered on April 9, 1945 in the Flossenbürg concentration camp (Upper Palatinate).

Expropriation (1945)
After the end of the war, the manor was expropriated in the course of the land reform in 1945 and 20 Eastern European refugee families were housed in the castle.

Period of the GDR (1949–1990)

During the GDR era, the three wings of the palace housed a house, the municipal administration, a hairdresser, a post office and a kindergarten, among other things. The structural deterioration seemed unstoppable.

Time after the fall of the Wall (1990-2014)

The building has been empty since the fall of the Wall. With the incorporation of Schnaditz into Bad Düben, the castle came into the possession of the city of Bad Düben in 1999. Between 1991 and 2006, the city received grants of 651,000 euros for the maintenance of the cultural monument from the monument protection authority of the then regional council in Leipzig.

The facility, which belonged to the city, was increasingly threatened with decay and was sold in August 2014 to a group of investors who wanted to start the repairs immediately.

Schnaditz Castle GmbH (2014-2018)

sale

On August 29, 2014 the castle was sold to a group of five American investors for 120,000 euros. Since October 16, 2014 "Schloss Schnaditz GmbH" has been entered in the commercial register at the Leipzig District Court under HRB 30807.

An investment commitment of 3.2 million euros is said to have been agreed in the purchase agreement. The investor group did not provide evidence by 2017 and allowed the deadlines to pass twice. Therefore, there was even a possible reversal of the purchase contract in 2017. In addition, in the purchase agreement, the city granted a right of use for the use of three rooms for the Kohlhaas Club Schloss Schnaditz to set up a museum.

Usage plans

The renovation includes the installation of heating and new windows, the laying of new water and power lines and the replacement of the existing plaster. Renovations are also to take place in the castle, the first being the restaurant in the former distillery. The former knight's hall is to be available as a room for events and private celebrations in the future. In the area with the old column on the ground floor, a cozy beer parlor and a rustic wine parlor in the cellar vault could be created. Private flats and apartments will then be built for the investors. Some hotel rooms and 28 holiday apartments are also planned.

In cooperation with the Kohlhaas Club Schloss Schnaditz, a museum is to be built in four rooms that will, among other things, be dedicated to the names and stories of Kohlhase , Oster and von Steuben . In addition, the city announced that civil weddings could also be offered in the castle.

The total investment is estimated at 3.9 million euros. After completion, 12 to 13 jobs could be created.

Construction progress

In 2016, the city administration granted investors a respite because the financing for the € 3.9 million renovation project was not available. As of February 2017, it was announced that the construction work is still ongoing. Water, sewage and power lines are said to have been laid in the castle so far. The further renovation is to be carried out step by step with your own money. By December 31, 2017, the group of investors had neither implemented the required construction sums, nor did they have a site manager under German law. In January 2018, the storm Friederike damaged the castle.

Reversal of the purchase contract

Due to the lack of construction progress by the end of 2017, the Bad Düben city council unanimously decided on March 22, 2018 to reverse the purchase contract for the property and castle with Schloss Schnaditz GmbH. This means that the city of Bad Düben becomes the owner again. Helga van Horn and her son Nick from the investor group continued to live in the castle and did not move out because they did not want to lose the 400,000 euros they had invested and were still looking for potential investors from South Africa in October 2018, but they did not turn up. The castle was evacuated on December 14, 2018.

Buyer search (since 2019)

Since the eviction in December 2018, the city of Bad Düben has been looking for a new buyer for the castle. There have already been inquiries and ideas about the use of the rooms, such as use as a children's hotel, youth hostel or training center for young people. The financing is problematic, however, since the castle is in great need of renovation. The city of Bad Düben cannot make any investments due to its financial situation and other projects in the city.

Kohlhaas Club Schloss Schnaditz eV

According to the Leipzig District Court, the Kohlhaas Club Schloss Schnaditz eV , previously known as Schloss Schnaditz eV , was registered on May 15, 2002 .

The aim of the Schnaditz Castle Association was the renovation and use of Schnaditz Castle as a school with a boarding school, European youth academy, cultural center and creative workshop. The purpose of the statutes was realized through the repair, operation and maintenance of the listed Renaissance castle. The association consisted of 35 members.

When the castle was sold, the city of Bad Düben had the right to use three rooms for the Kohlhaas Club Schloss Schnaditz granted in the purchase contract. The condition for this was that a museum be set up here.
