The palace was built from 1741 to 1743 under the landowner Erasmus Wilhelm von Redern from the Schwante family and his wife Catherina Elisabeth von Bredow from the Sontz family by an unknown architect, probably with advice from Knobelsdorff . It was built on the site of a permanent house from 1618, which has been partially vaulted into the cellar of today's castle . The two narrow side wings were probably not added until 1744 - as can be seen from the construction of the roof truss - and served as utility rooms and to accommodate the staff.

In 1888 Richard Sommer, who was also the builder of Sommerswalde Castle in the Schwanter Forest, acquired the estate and had new farm buildings built from 1903 to 1905. In 1910, the interior of the three-wing complex was also fundamentally changed. Today's disposition of doors, door frames and wooden panels largely date from this time. The staircase was also moved from the vestibule to the side in the former living rooms.

After Sommer's death in 1916, the eleven heirs sold the property. The land was taken over by the agricultural cooperative "Freie Scholle", while the castle went to Vicco von Bülow in 1924 - a committed member of the Stahlhelm, Bund der Frontsoldaten and from 1935 chief of protocol in the Foreign Office. He then called himself Vicco von Bülow-Schwante . Under him, in the 1920s, a balcony with a terrace was added to the rear and, in the 1930s, a driveway made of Silesian sandstone with a ramp parapet and portal lions was built on the entrance side .

After the Second World War , the castle was temporarily a makeshift hospital for typhus patients and then an educational institution of the FDJ . In 1962 it came into the municipal administration. It stood empty until 2009 and was then sold to Hexenkessel Hoftheater und Strand GmbH, which renovated the castle and ran a restaurant with theater performances there from 2014 (as well as others in Berlin, including Clärchens Ballhaus ). In 2019 it was resold to a couple of art dealers and collectors who live in it and are planning smaller public events and occasional rental for festivities in the future; the café in the brick house on the Schwanter See is to continue to operate. In June 2020, a sculpture park with works by Hans Arp , Martin Creed , Tony Cragg , Björn Dahlem , Dan Graham , Carsten Nicolai , George Rickey and Ai Weiwei opened in the manor house's 20 hectare park .
