history

The upper castle

In 1348 the lords of the place already owned a castle with a bailey . This was once located between the old and the lower lock. In 1718, on the orders of the Landgrave of Hesse, the upper castle was built on the main castle. The castle was the summer residence of the Landgraves of Hesse. It was partly built in half-timbered construction and designed with a park .

In 1815 the property became state property of the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach . In 1848 a cholera hospital and later a sister convalescent home was housed. In 1910 it was bought by Dr. Greff, who tried to establish a spa there and had a foyer built next door. Greff later sold it to the Günter family. After the Second World War , the castle was expropriated and from 1960 onwards it was used as a school, after-school care center, kindergarten and crèche.

The lower castle

The lower castle probably stood on the site of the former outer bailey. The Lords of Völkershausen built it in 1613. It served as the seat for a branch line.

The upper floor was made of half-timbered houses with a massive substructure. The castle was angular and angled. Officials and the estate court as well as a forestry and later a doctor's office lived in the walls. In 1634, hordes of war completely looted the building but did not destroy it. In 1706 the Völkershausen family died out. The castle was occupied by the court of the Landgrave from Hesse. In 1718 it was set up as a summer residence. From 1815 to 1847 the rule of Weimar was transferred . In 1875 it housed the rent office and the chief forester. In 1930 it was established. In 1945 it became a doctor's apartment and doctor's office . The doctor left the place in front of the Red Army troops and Dr. Müller took over.

destruction

A blast in the Merkers potash mine in 1989 triggered the Völkershausen rock attack . Both locks then had to be demolished due to major damage.
