Vösendorf Castle

The Vösendorf Castle is a former moated castle in Lower Austria Vösendorf . It is surrounded by 40,000 m² of green space.

The original building was from the 11th century. The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1175. The castle was rebuilt in the 16th century. It was destroyed in various wars such as the first and second Turkish sieges, but was rebuilt again and again. In 1794, Emperor Franz acquired the castle, the town and the “stately brick kiln” to build the Laxenburg Franzensburg . The present shape of the castle goes back to the reconstruction in 1808 under Emperor Franz II .

During the Second World War , the municipality of Vienna became the owner of the palace in 1940. Although the municipality of Vösendorf became independent again from Greater Vienna in 1954 , the castle remained in the possession of the municipality of Vienna and was rededicated as an agricultural enterprise. The palace and garden remained inaccessible to the population. When agriculture was relocated to Laxenburg , the municipality of Vösendorf was initially able to rent some rooms. The municipality of Vienna let the castle fall into disrepair.

In 1991, under Mayor Herfried Vincze, the almost dilapidated castle was acquired. The castle was revitalized by the municipality of Vösendorf under Mayor Meinhard Kronister. The building had to be stabilized, the roof structure completely renovated with new roofing, 300 m³ of masonry reinforcement and crack filling with synthetic resins, 400 m² of wall drainage using the separation process, and facade repairs and new wooden box windows. In addition, frescoes from the 17th century were uncovered in a hall on the ground floor.

The building has housed the municipal office since 1999, as well as a bicycle museum and a Peter Jordan memorial room after he had worked there for years. The center, which was completed in 1999, also has a library, a castle café, such as a bank branch of the Raiffeisenbank and event rooms that are used for classical concerts, readings or other events. The Austrian concert guitarist Johanna Beisteiner is one of the well-known artists who have performed at Schloss Vösendorf .
