Vik Castle (older spelling Wik ) is a magnificent building in the Swedish municipality of Uppsala in the historic province of Uppland . It is located on Lake Mälaren about 10 km southwest of Uppsala .

The building was originally a defensive castle built around 1450. In the 17th century a French-style castle emerged from this, which is now protected as Byggnadsminne .

Today Vik Castle belongs to the Provincial Parliament ( Landsting ) of the Uppsala County and is used for training courses and conferences. In 1998, the castle was seen in the film Commander Hamilton as the main character's residence.

history

The first written mention of the Vik ( Vihc ) estate as the property of Ramborg Israelsdotter (And), wife of the Imperial Councilor Arvid Gustavsson (Sparre av Vik), took place in 1303. After that, the farm belonged to the Bielke family , who had the castle built. According to the bishop and chronicler Peder Swart, Gustav Wasa besieged “a small house called Vik” in 1521, which is now identified with the castle. The change of ownership took place mainly through inheritance and marriage. Gut Vik belonged among others to Gustaf Horn and the noble families von Liewen and von Essen . It was first sold in 1912.

The conference center consists of 15 halls of various sizes. Eight of them are in the castle. There are eight hotels in the vicinity that are open all year round. An activity center is connected to the conference center, which has additional offers for visitors.

There is an extensive nature park adjacent to the castle. The gravel paths form a nature trail through deciduous forests and pastures. In summer, the nearby beach with jetties and grassy areas has many visitors. There is also a café there, which is open from June to August.
