Volkersheim Castle

Volkersheim Palace is a palace complex built in 1775 in the Volkersheim district of the city of Bockenem in Lower Saxony . A retirement home has been located in the building complex since the 1950s .

description

The palace was planned as a symmetrical complex with a central building and two wings as well as a courtyard . Half a central building and a wing were built. The castle originally had 34 rooms and a large hall on the upper floor. In 1826 a fire destroyed a castle wing and several farm buildings. The castle also had a brewery , which was used for brewing until 1885. After the brewery was demolished in 1904, the north wing of the palace was extended by an extension. The coat of arms of the von Cramm family is located above the main entrance in the central building . To the east of the castle is a park with three ponds.

history

At the end of the 18th century, Volkersheim was a farming village with 72 houses. In the village there were two manors , the Oberhof and the Unterhof , which were feudal estates . As early as the 13th century, the von Cramm family had , among others, property or feudal rights here. In 1774 the privy councilor August Adolf von Cramm built the castle. In 1826 the castle was owned by Albert von Cramm and his wife Clara, née von Krosigk . After Albert's death it passed to the von Gadenstedt family and passed to Albrecht von Gadenstedt, a chamberlain of the Duke of Brunswick . After Albrecht's death in 1929, his son Burghard took over the castle, who fell as a soldier in the Soviet Union during World War II . During the war, people who were evacuated from large cities because of the aerial warfare lived on the castle grounds . When American troops marched in in 1945, they moved into the castle. Then it was a collection camp for Polish forced laborers from the Salzgitter area . After that, the castle served as an emergency shelter for people displaced from the German eastern regions . From 1948 the castle owner Albrecht von Gadenstedt leased the castle complex to the district of Gandersheim , which housed around 170 elderly people, especially those who were displaced from their homeland. After the district had acquired the castle in 1953, it had the farm buildings demolished in 1955 and a new residential building built. The number of residents was reduced to 90 people. During the regional reform in Lower Saxony , the Hildesheim district took over the senior citizens' home in 1974 and transferred it to the German Red Cross . After a renovation for 6 million DM , the retirement home now has around 50 residents.
