The castle ruins Hartenberg , also Hrad Hartenberk , a castle ruin from the Gothic period in Hřebeny (Josefov) (Hartenberg) is now incorporated into Josefov in Okres Sokolov in the Czech Republic and is located on the Zwodau above Hřebeny .

As a castle of the von Hertenberg family from Vogtland , it was built at the beginning of the 13th century and was first mentioned in a document in 1214. This castle was strategically built on the way from Saxony and Thuringia to Bohemia on a rocky height above the Zwodau. It was a border castle on the southern edge of the Ore Mountains near Falkenau an der Eger ( Sokolov ). Count Thimo II von Colditz , chamber master of Emperor Karl IV and governor of Upper Lusatia and Silesia, sold the Hartenberg Castle, which he currently owns, to his employer, Emperor Karl IV . At times the castle belonged to Count Schlick .

Nearby was lead ore mined. Several tunnels are evidence of this. Below the castle are the ruins of a former brewery belonging to the Wallhof rulership, a German crown fiefdom with 7,000 people at the time until their inheritance was lifted . In 1857 the large estate came into the possession of the great niece of Count Auersperk von Hartenberg, Franziska Freiin von Kopal .

In its cultural heyday, Hartenberg had an important library, various mineralogical and cultural collections, was surrounded by well-tended paths, had a castle theater with performances, a castle pond, glass houses with tropical plants and a school. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe celebrated his 72nd birthday with a three-day party at the invitation of the lord of the castle, Count Josef Auersperg auf Hartenberg (* 1767 in Prague; † 1829 in Brno), lawyer and chief judge and state law president in Prague, accompanied by Joseph Sebastian Grüner . Further numerous stays followed, as Johannes Urzidil reports, and Goethe is said to have written one of his elegies there. Goethe celebrated his 70th birthday here in 1819.

The castle was destroyed several times over the years and was rebuilt. In 1945 (after the end of the Second World War ), the castle owners were expropriated and driven out, the castle looted and the inventory stolen. In 1985 Hartenberg Castle was destroyed by arson, the castle building has since fallen into disrepair and is saved from deterioration in sections by collecting private donations. A tour of the construction site is possible. The castle area is now a student volunteer base in Europe .

Viktor Karell gives a good description of the complex before it was destroyed in the castles and palaces of the Ore Mountains and Egertal.

The way to the castle is not signposted. At the exit of Josefov in the direction of Krajkova, the road leads downhill through Hřebeny on the right. The castle can be reached on foot uphill from the Hřebeny train station, past the ruins of the former brewery.

On Hartenberg was born

  • Franziska Freiin von Kopal (* 1883, died 1963 in Munich), landlady and president of the Catholic Women's Association in West Bohemia , granddaughter of Karl Freiherr von Kopal (1788–1848), colonel and holder of the Maria Theresa Order.
