Narrow film was the last German-language specialist magazine that deals solely with the medium of narrow film in its various versions.

It dealt with interesting topics especially for collectors as well as amateur and hobby filmmakers. This included reports on various film accessories, such as cameras and film material, and the professional handling of them, but also the dissemination of relevant information on the topic.

With their reporting, the editorial team addressed not only the traditional narrow-film makers but also young filmmakers and tried to bring them closer to the narrow-film formats, which are considered obsolete.

history

The early post-war period was not only a time of hardship for amateur filmmakers . Nevertheless, the Braunschweig journalist Hellmuth Lange self-published a magazine in 1948 that was devoted to narrow- format film: the narrow film . With its 24 pages in postcard format, it offered amateur filmmakers a platform for the exchange of information for the first time.

After the narrow film initially only dealt with the silent film formats 16 mm and normal 8 or double 8, in accordance with the technical state of research , it experienced an enormous increase in importance with a new invention in 1965: the Super 8 format launched by Eastman Kodak revolutionized the Amateur filmmaking through its improvements and innovations in terms of film and sound recording. At last, normal earners could also afford the handy cameras and films, so that cine film reached its heyday in the 1970s. The sales figures for narrow film also benefited from this .

However, when the medium of video became increasingly important in the late 1980s , this also had an impact on Super 8 film and its related formats. They were gradually displaced from the market by the new data carrier until they were only a niche product. The end of the narrow film era and the narrow film that accompanied it seemed near, especially since the trade magazine gained the reputation of being read only by old men who did not want to part with their Super 8 cameras.

However, the creeping decline of the small film was put on hold: Today the amateur formats are experiencing a growing interest in which not only older enthusiasts but also young filmmakers who are discovering the genre participate. This trend also had an impact on the narrow film , which was finally relaunched in 2004. For this, the magazine - now taken over by the Berlin publishing house Schiele & Schön - has been completely revised. In addition, their editorial office was relocated to Hamburg, where Jürgen Lossau has held the position of editor-in-chief ever since.

The new concept away from the technical shop-floor talk towards practical reports from the scene was honored by the recipients : The consequences were increasing readership and a lively response to the reporting. However, after the Super 8 color reversal film was discontinued by Kodak and recently declining reader and advertising numbers, the editor-in-chief saw no future for the magazine and announced that it would be discontinued in issue 2/2013. Some content has been continued in Zoom - The Filmmaker's Magazine since issue 4/2013 .

Content

The narrow film was dedicated to all topics related to the film formats Super 8 , Single 8 , Normal 8 , 9.5 mm and 16 mm . The focus was on reporting on film material , film design, dubbing and cameras. A special focus was therefore also information on new products and the background to current developments and trends in the narrow film sector. This is supplemented with reports from the scene, portraits of filmmakers and references to film fairs and festivals as well as user meetings.

In addition to suggestions and tips for hobbyists and collectors, the following categories could be found in the narrow film : film world, film exchanges, film festivals, regulars 'table, scene, home cinema, film museums, time-lapse, film school, filmmakers, zoom, collectors' luck, trailers and classifieds.

NOMOS Super 8 Film Award

After its relaunch in 2004, the narrow film set itself the task of making filming in Super 8 format more attractive again for many amateur filmmakers. That is why the trade journal organized an annual film competition, which has meanwhile advanced to become the world's largest international competition for chemical cine films.

Initially, the participants should send in their films on a specific topic, today only the film format and a maximum length are specified. A jury of experts decides on the winners in several categories, and the prizes are then awarded at a joint award ceremony at which all the winning films are shown.

The competition topics were:

  • 2004: "Time"
  • 2005: "Super 8 is alive"
  • 2006: "tick8"
  • 2007: "tick8"

The competition was named after its main sponsor, the watch manufacturer Nomos .

smallformat

Smallformat , the English-language counterpart to narrowfilm , has been published since 2005 . It contained some of the same articles as its sister magazine, but half was filled with international topics from foreign authors. With the 6/2008 edition, smallformat was discontinued.
