The Butterfly Nebula , also known as M2-9 , is a galactic planetary nebula in the constellation Serpent Bearer and is approximately 2100 light-years from Earth . The planetary nebula was discovered by the German-American astronomer Rudolph Minkowski in 1947 . Images from the Hubble Space Telescope from 1997 reveal fine gas structures moving away from the star at a speed of over 1,600 km / s.
