The Schmitt Mesa is a 1000 m high table mountain in the southeast of the Palmerland on the Antarctic Peninsula . The 24 km long and 8 km wide formation forms the southern edge of the Latady Mountains .
The United States Geological Survey mapped it based on its own measurements and aerial photographs of the United States Navy from 1961 to 1967. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named the mountain in 1968 after the American marine biologist Waldo Lasalle Schmitt (1887–1977) von der Smithsonian Institution , which took part in an expedition to Deception Island in 1927 and participated in a research expedition to Marguerite Bay and the Weddell Sea between 1962 and 1963 .
