The Schnabel-Ragwurz ( Ophrys oxyrrhynchos ) is a species of the genus Ragwurzen ( Ophrys ) in the family of orchids (Orchidaceae). It blooms from March to May and is very similar to Lacaitas Ragwurz ( Ophrys lacaitae ).
features
This herbaceous perennial plant reaches heights of between 10 and 25 cm. The inflorescence consists of three to nine flowers . The sepals are usually green, but rarely brown-red. The hairy petals are triangular. The slightly humped lip is brownish-red in the rear half, which is densely hairy, and in the front, almost bald half, red to yellow-brown, rarely only yellow. The appendix, up to four millimeters long, is upright. The most extensive time appears purple with a white border.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 36.
Location and distribution
You can find this orchid in light oak forests , garrigues and on former cultivated land up to an altitude of 1300 m . The distribution area extends from Sicily to Malta .
Systematics
One can distinguish several subspecies:
- Bianca ragwurz ( Ophrys oxyrrhynchos subsp. Biancae (death.) Galesi, Cristaudo & Maugeri , syn .: Ophrys biancae (death.) Macch. ): It is endemic to Sicily. It thrives there at altitudes between 45 and 650 meters above sea level. Eucera euroa was observed as a pollinator .
- Magnificent Schnabel-Ragwurz ( Ophrys oxyrrhynchos subsp. Calliantha (Bartolo & Pulv.) Galesi, Cristaudo & Maugeri ): It occurs in Sicily at altitudes between 50 and 600 meters above sea level.
- Apulian beaked ragwort ( Ophrys oxyrrhynchos subsp. Celiensis (O.Danesch & E.Danesch) Del Prete ): It occurs in Apulia and Calabria at altitudes between 150 and 550 meters above sea level. Eucera graeca was observed as a pollinator .
- Sicilian Schnabel-Ragwurz ( Ophrys oxyrrhynchos subsp. Oxyrrhynchos ): It occurs in Sicily and Malta at altitudes between 50 and 1,300 meters above sea level.
