Slug pellets

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Slug pellets is a common pest killers , which is granular and pressed and against worm infestation in the garden - is used and house area, called a molluscicide . Most of the commercially available substances are attractive to snails and are ingested by them orally. There are also slug pellets with a contact effect , in which the poisonous substance is absorbed by the mucous membrane when it comes into contact with the snail .

Most snails that come into contact with slug pellets die on the spot and have to be removed by hand or covered with earth. But there are also slug pellets that take days to kill the slugs. They withdraw into their hiding places beforehand and then do not pose a threat to other animals that they might eat. Slug pellets make no distinction between mainly damaging and mostly harmless species of snail. It also works with snails as the under nature conservation standing Snail .

Mechanisms of Action

Slug pellets have an attractive effect on slugs over long distances. The disadvantage here is that snails are also attracted from a large area and may leave clutches of eggs before they die.

Various preparations are available for combating snails. Composition and mechanisms of action differ significantly. Inorganic salts , alkaloids , hormonal agents and combinations are common.

Slug pellets can contain metaldehyde , which ingestion can be fatal for children and mammals. If used improperly, the toxins pollute the groundwater. The use of the active ingredient methiocarb as a molluscicide has not been approved in Germany since September 19, 2014.

An alternative active ingredient is iron (III) phosphate , which is also approved for organic farming. Salty preparations usually damage the snail by disrupting its water balance. So-called "biological" slug pellets often contain extracts from plants that have developed natural defenses against snail damage (for example certain mosses ) or have a deterrent effect on snails, such as lavandin oil , which is obtained from Lavandula hybrida (hybrid of real lavender and Speik lavender ).
