Schneeberg defends itself was a politically right-wing citizens' initiative in Schneeberg (Ore Mountains) , which mobilized residents against an asylum seeker home near the city.

As part of the nationwide debate on the accommodation of asylum seekers in 2013, many local citizens' groups were founded in the social networks, which include the Facebook -Auftritt of Schneeberg defends itself heard.

In autumn 2013, several hundred asylum seekers were temporarily accommodated in the Jägerkaserne in the Wolfgangmaßen district. Initially around 500 people lived in the accommodation, at the beginning of November 2013 there were 230. Right-wing activists and the National Democratic Party of Germany (NPD) at local and state level tried to use the situation to stir up fear of crime in the population. The police denied allegations of an increased crime rate at a citizens' forum in October 2013.

Politicians from Die Linke and Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen pointed out that many NPD cadres are active in the citizens' initiative . The spokesman for the citizens' initiative is Stefan Hartung, representative of the NPD in the Bad Schlema municipal council .

On November 1, 2013, around 1,800 people demonstrated with a torchlight procession "Schneeberger Lichtellauf" against the planned new asylum accommodation in the former barracks, to which the NPD functionary Stefan Hartung had called. The NPD member of the state parliament, Mario Löffler , also appeared at the meeting . Some demonstrators defended themselves in the MDR against the charge of supporting the NPD with their presence. About 200 meters away, a counter rally by the parties Die Grünen, Die Linke and Antifa groups took place under the motto "Refugees Welcome - Against the racist mob in Schneeberg and everywhere". Around 500 Schneebergers were present. To support the proponents, the bells of all Schneeberg churches had rung. The state leader of Alliance 90 / The Greens, Volkmar Zschocke , accused the NPD, on the back of seeking help xenophobia to stir.

There were four events of this type in total. The last one in January 2014 was attended by around 250 demonstrators.

In November 2014, the initiative called for a protest again under the new name Freigeist . According to the police, around 600 people took to the streets “for the preservation of home and tradition”.
