Schneeberglauf

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Schneeberglauf is not only a mountain run, but also a race between man and locomotive.
Impression from the Schneeberglauf 2008

The international Raiffeisen Schneeberglauf , or " Leo Arnoldi -Gedenklauf", is a mountain running event in Puchberg am Schneeberg in Lower Austria . The run is a “man versus machine” battle; the runners compete in a direct duel with a steam train from the Schneebergbahn . The second running event on the Schneeberg is the Fadensteiglauf .

The runners start in the middle of the Puchberg area at the Schneeberghalle at an altitude of 585  m above sea level. A. Since the runners have to cross the railroad tracks after almost a kilometer, the start of the steam locomotive has been moved behind this intersection so that there are no obstacles for the railroad and runners, but also no accidents. However, the steam locomotive only starts from this point after the first runners have crossed the level crossing and so has no time advantage. The mountain running route has a total length of ten kilometers and offers two refreshment points. The gradient averages 12 percent, in some places even up to 20 percent. The common goal is at Hochschneeberg am Schneeberg train station at an altitude of 1800  m .

history

The Schneeberglauf has been organized by the LC Running Puchberg since 1997 . The initial spark for the run was the hundredth anniversary of the opening of the cog railway , on the anniversary of which the mountain run was held for the first time, as a race against the old steam-powered cog railway. The steam locomotive drives up to the Schneeberg in around 55 to 60 minutes (normal travel time 78 minutes) every year. It should be noted that the steam locomotive needs a longer stay in the Baumgartner station to take water.

The race man against machine is always very close, but the runners have so far been able to achieve significantly more victories than the cogwheel railway. In 2001 and 2002 the steam locomotive was even able to leave the runners behind twice in a row. Between 2006 and 2008, the exceptional mountain runner and multiple mountain running world champion Jonathan Wyatt ( New Zealand ) won the mountain run three times in a row. He repeated his success in 2010.

For the first time, the Schneeberglauf 2008 was a Grand Prix run of the world championships in mountain running and a run of the Vienna mountain championship .

There was a special premiere in 2010 when, with Jonathan Wyatt and his wife Antonella Confortola-Wyatt, a married couple stood on the podium for the first time.

The Austrian mountain running world champion (this title is only awarded unofficially) Andrea Mayr set new standards for women in 2008. She undercut the previous record of the Austrian Elisabeth Rust (64:22 minutes) more than clearly and was in the finish line after 58:21 minutes. Only five men were faster than Andrea Mayr at the finish. This even though the last hundred meters of altitude had to be run in the snow at only +3 ° C.

Among the women, the 30-time Austrian national champion Carina Lilge-Leutner , who celebrated her third win at the Schneeberglauf in 2011 at the age of 51, should also be emphasized .

In the 2012 Schneeberglauf, 396 participants were able to successfully finish the race and thus improve the previous record from 2009 by one finisher. The starting field of 480 participants also set a new record in 2012.

Prices

In addition to the prize money of 500 euros, the best placed men and women will receive a trophy in the form of a cogwheel of the Schneebergbahn on a stone. The 2nd and 3rd placed in the men and women category also receive prize money. Furthermore, the best three runners of each age group will be awarded a medal. An age group comprises ten years, starting with the age of 20. There is also an age group for juniors, i.e. participants under 20. The winner of each of these age groups will also receive a voucher for a free start in the next competition.

Winners list
