The Schnepfenkopf , Schnepfenschnabel or Schöpfer ( Haustellum haustellum ) is a snail from the family of spiny snails (Muricidae), which is widespread in the Indo-Pacific . It feeds on carrion , among other things .

features

The brownish red-yellow snail shell of haustellum , covered with red-brown stripes , which in adult snails reaches a length of up to 10 to 15 cm, has a spherical body with three rows of nodules between the bulges, a short thread and a very long and thin siphon channel. The case mouth is almost circular, furrowed at the entrance and smooth and white inside. The edge of the lip completes the mouth towards the spindle. There are no spikes on the housing. The operculum is horny.

distribution

The Schnepfenkopf is widespread in the Indo-Pacific ; in the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean from the coast of East Africa eastwards, around Madagascar and the Mascarene Islands , to the Pacific Ocean to Melanesia , from Japan to Queensland ( Australia ) and New Caledonia .

habitat

The Schnepfenkopf lives on sand and gravel in the intertidal zone and below to a depth of 90 m.

food

Haustellum haustellum feeds on carrion , among other things .

Importance to humans

Haustellum haustellum , known for a long time under the original name Murex haustellum by Linné . The species is collected for its meat and for its shell, which is sold as jewelry.
