There is no one-size-fits-all understanding of what a chocolate cake is. The food lexicon of Dr. Oetker describes chocolate cakes as follows: "[...] made from various masses, often medium-heavy whipping or sand masses , long or round cakes with a full or partial chocolate coating (no white chocolate) or a flavor-giving portion of chocolate inside."
