The Schreckensteiniidae are a family of butterflies (Lepidoptera). They occur with only eight species almost all over the world, except in parts of Africa , in Southeast Asia and Australia .

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 10 to 12 millimeters and their body is elongated. They have narrow forewings that are about four times longer than wide and usually have a light brown basic color. The hind wings are also very narrow, elongated and tapering to a point and, like the forewings, have long fringes. They are always narrower than the fore wings, but in some species they are significantly narrower. Their antennae are medium to long, but reach a maximum of 80% of the forewing length. They are thread-like in both sexes. They have reduced maxillary palps , the labial palps are long, curved and directed forward or upward. Your scaly proboscis is fully developed.

They assume a strange resting position in which they stretch their back legs upwards. The middle pairs of legs have two, the rear four long, thin, branch-like protruding thorns on the tibia , which give the butterflies a bizarre shape.

The forewings have 13 wing veins with two anal veins (1a and 1b). The hind wings have nine veins with two anal veins (1a and 1b). A disc cell is formed on them .

Way of life

The caterpillars feed mainly on plants from the sumac family (Anacardiaceae), figwort family (Scrophulariaceae) and rose family (Rosaceae). The European species feeds on Rubus species, such as B. Blackberries . They are loosely haired with medium length hair and their belly legs are strikingly slender. They eat sitting freely on the leaves, not mining . Pupation takes place in a wide-meshed web either on the ground or probably on the plants. The doll has spikes arranged in pairs on the back.

Systematics

In all of Europe , and also in Central Europe, there is only one type of this family:
