The village of Šereitlaukis ( German  Schreitlaugken ) is located in the Tauragė district in southwest Lithuania at the mouth of the Jūra River in the Memel . The village belongs to the administrative district (Seniūnija) Vilkyškiai (Willkischken) within the municipality of Pagėgiai (Pogegen) .

Geographical location

Šereitlaukis can be reached from Vilkyškiai via a side road (4229). Until 1945 Willkischken was the next train station on the Pogegen – Schmalleningken line , which is no longer in operation today.

history

The place was first mentioned as Sareike in 1344 and developed into a large estate. Other forms of name: Schreitlacken (before 1680), Schreitlaucken (before 1785), Noble Schreitlaugken (before 1920) and Schreitlaugken (without addition, until 1922 and 1939 to 1945).

In 1874, the place was Amtsdorf for a newly established administrative district , which until 1922 was assigned to the Tilsit district , then to the Pogegen district . In the District Schreitlaugken next Schreitlaugken two places were incorporated that were incorporated into the village on May 1, 1939: Election Thal (Lithuanian: Pempynė) and - from 1920 - Bitteszerischken (Bitežeriai).

In 1939 Schreitlaugken belonged to the Tilsit-Ragnit district until 1945 and still had 239 inhabitants, fewer than in 1910 with 277 and in 1925 with 347.

In 1945 Schreitlaugken was incorporated into the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic with the Memelland and has been part of the Republic of Lithuania since 1990 .

church

Evangelical

Before 1945, Schreitlaugken, with its almost exclusively Protestant population, was a parish of the Evangelical Church of Willkischken within the church district of Tilsit in the church province of East Prussia (with its own consistory for the Memelland during the years 1923 to 1939) of the Church of the Old Prussian Union . Even today, the Protestant church members - now numerically few - are assigned to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Vilkyškiai , which now belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lithuania .

Catholic

Even the - then very few - Catholic church members were oriented towards Willkischken before 1945 and were therefore subordinate to the Tilsit dean's office (today in Russian: Sowetsk) in the Diocese of Warmia . Today the municipality with its Šv. Onos bažnyčia ("St. Anne's Church") in Vilkyškiai part of the Šilutė (Heydekrug) deanery in the Telšiai (Telschen) diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Lithuania .
