Schulenburg

The Schulenburg was a medieval tower hill castle (Motte) in the area of today's town of Salzwedel in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel in Saxony-Anhalt . It is located near the district of Stappenbeck .

Location and history

The castle is located a few kilometers south of Salzwedel and about 3 km west of the town of Stappenbeck on the right side of the Jeetze. It was built on a kind of island surrounded by two arms of the Jeetze. The castle was hidden in the Jeetz marshes. Only a mound of earth is left of the previous facility.

The castle is said to have been built in the late twelfth century and, according to an indication in a historical written source, was destroyed by the Salzwedelers around 1214. It gave its name to the noble family von der Schulenburg and was its ancestral seat. The naming of Schulenburg Castle was derived from its geographical location and the Middle High German word schulen - to hide ( to skulk - to lurk in secret). The phrase te der sculenden borch meant “by the hidden castle”, and it became Schulenburg .

Research history

Nothing remains above ground of the moth enclosure , which was destroyed in the 14th century . At its previous location, the remains of the 20 by 25 meter castle hill can be found today. During research in the 19th century, the castle tower, house and cellar were still there as ruins, which were then systematically removed during leveling work. State director Wilhelm von der Schulenburg restored the castle site and unearthed medieval weapons and equipment.

In 2016 the University of Göttingen carried out archaeological investigations at the castle site. Remnants of the octagonal castle tower with a diameter of 12 meters and the palace were discovered and partially exposed. The foundations and walls were up to 1.60 meters thick. The investigating archaeologists estimated the diameter of the entire castle complex to be 60 to 70 meters.

legend

In 1848, Adalbert Kuhn and Wilhelm Schwartz passed on the legend of the destruction of the Schulenburg. In the mountain, called the old Schulenburg, the Schulenburgs and their comrades are said to have had a cave, called röverkule , in which a girl they robbed had to run the farm . She was able to free herself and flee to Stappenbeck. Then the cave was destroyed.
