Schuylkill Haven is a borough in Schuylkill County in the state of Pennsylvania in the United States .
geography
The place is six kilometers south of Pottsville and 145 kilometers northeast of Philadelphia . The Schuylkill River flows through the middle of Schuylkill Haven. The Pennsylvania Route 61 touches the place in the north.
history
The original inhabitants of the area were the Lenni Lenape Indians . John Fincher, a Quaker from nearby Chester County , settled there in 1750 but was killed by the Aborigines along with most of his family in 1763. In 1775, the German immigrant Martin Dreibelbis opened a distillery , a sawmill and a grain mill . After the Schuylkill Canal was completed in 1825, the place was called Schuylkill Haven . According to other sources, the Schuylkill River that flows through the place is considered to be the namesake. Due to the abundance of Anzhracite coal in the area, the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad also ran through the town from the 1830s and the population grew rapidly. After the end of the Second World War , however, coal lost its importance as a source of energy and coal production and population declined again.
The nearby Vraj Hindu Temple is now a major attraction for followers of Hinduism .
Demographic data
In 2012 a population of 5360 people was determined, which corresponds to a decrease of 3.4% compared to 2000. The average age in 2012 was 40.2 years, below the value of Pennsylvania, which was 43.3 years. 45.4% of today's residents can be traced back to immigrants from Germany. Other significant immigrant groups during the early days of the place came from Ireland ( 15.2%) and Italy ( 8.3%) .
