Location of Schwanhausen in Bavaria

Schwanhausen is a district of the community Sulzdorf an der Lederhecke in the Lower Franconian district of Rhön-Grabfeld ( Bavaria ).

geography

The village is located in the Lower Franconian part of Grabfeld, right on the border with Heldburger Land in Thuringia .

history

In 1179 Schwanhausen was first mentioned in a deed of donation from Poppo von Sulzdorf. In 1602 the noble Freihof in Schwanhausen von den Stein zum Altenstein came to the family of the Barons Truchseß von Wetzhausen , who had their seat in the neighboring Sternberg .

During the Thirty Years' War in 1640, the imperial army under Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria plundered and pillaged the grave field , although Schwanhausen was not spared. The St. Vitus Chapel, which was destroyed to the ground, was not rebuilt after the end of the Thirty Years' War . The sandstones from the ruin were used in the construction of the new church in Sulzdorf in 1688. The only remnant is the bell in the Protestant parish hall built in 1911. Around 1700 Schwanhausen was owned by the Barons von Guttenberg and the Duchy of Saxony-Hildburghausen . In 1764 the municipality of Obereßfeld bought the Schwanhäuser estate from the Sternberg lordship. In 1796, seven Lutheran families from Tambach near Gotha settled in Schwanhausen and the surrounding area for reasons of faith .

Schwanhausen was part of the manor of the barons von Guttenberg, which was mediated by the Grand Duchy of Würzburg of Archduke Ferdinand of Tuscany in 1806 and with this fell to Bavaria in 1814 . In 1817 the Schwanhäuser estate was sold to private customers.

On April 1, 1971 Schwanhausen was incorporated into the community of Sulzdorf an der Lederhecke. In 1979 a benefactor of the community, the head of the Nuremberg company Schwan-Stabilo , Dr. Gustav Schwanhäusser, buried in Schwanhausen. His ancestors should be in the 11./12. He left there in the 19th century.
