The Schwanner Warte is an observation tower of the Black Forest Association above the Schwann district of the Straubenhardt community in the Enzkreis in Baden-Württemberg .

location

The tower known as the observation tower stands at 475  m above sea level. NHN Höhe on the edge of the northern Black Forest , on the Westweg Pforzheim - Basel , about half a kilometer south of the town of Straubenhardt. State road 339 runs in the direction of Dobel immediately to the west of the tower .

tower

The first tower construction was erected in 1885 after a peace linden tree was planted in the immediate vicinity in 1871, which commemorated the end of the Franco-Prussian War . The Schwanner Warte was the first observation tower in the northern Black Forest in the chosen design. The tower construction threatened to collapse and was closed in 1918.

A second control room was built in 1926. Despite its massive substructure, it did not survive the Second World War .

Today's almost 13 m high Schwanner Warte was finally built in 1953. It is a closed wooden structure on a square floor plan, houses four levels and is covered by a flat pyramid roof. On the northwest side there is a covered entrance door at ground level. The viewing platform is 8.5 m high on the fourth level and can only be reached via a steel spiral staircase with 42 steps attached to the outside of the tower .

Environment and view

Due to the view and the surroundings, the waiting room is a meeting point for short vacationers and holiday guests. The recreational and leisure facilities - shown on an information board of the Black Forest Central / North Nature Park on the parking lot - include restaurants, hiking opportunities, a glider airfield and the observation tower. From the platform of the tower there is a view of the Rhine Valley , the Palatinate Mountains, the Odenwald and part of the Vosges . When visibility is good, details can be discovered far away, such as the cooling towers of the nuclear power plant in Philippsburg or, when visibility is very good, the Speyer Cathedral . The Schwanner Warte can be reached with the VPE bus line 716 ( Pforzheim - Bad Herrenalb ).
