The Schwansee is located in the Ostallgäu in Bavaria, southeast of Füssen in the municipality of Schwangau and in the immediate vicinity of the royal castles of Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein , and 400 meters north of the Alpsee . Since 1956 he is part of the conservation area "Alpsee, Schwansee and Faulenbach valley ". The lake is owned by the Free State of Bavaria, for whose administration the Bavarian Administration of State Palaces, Gardens and Lakes is responsible.

In the 19th century, the Schwansee with the moors , wet meadows and limestone grasslands in the area was included in a park landscape that belonged to Hohenschwangau Castle . This Schwanseepark was created on behalf of the Bavarian royal family Wittelsbach according to plans by Peter Joseph Lenné , but today it is partly overgrown.

At present, the Schwansee is used by locals and tourists as a bathing lake in summer. Due to the strong shadowing from the surrounding mountains, the lake freezes over faster in winter than many other lakes in the wider area and is therefore popular with ice skaters from near and far.
