The Schwarzenbergturm is a lookout tower on the Schwarzenberg in Saarbrücken . The tower with a square cross-section in 1930 of reinforced concrete built and is since 1 August 1996 under monument protection .
history
The building owner of the tower was the Beautification Association St. Johann , the design was created by the then Saarbrücken city architect Hermann Leiber . The foundation stone was laid on June 27, 1930, and the tower was inaugurated on October 12, 1930.
The Schwarzenberg Tower was only slightly damaged during World War II, and the damage was repaired in 1949.
A first renovation with a ceremonial reopening by the then mayor Oskar Lafontaine took place in 1984. At the end of the 1990s, bars were installed in the stairwell and on the viewing platform due to several suicides .
During the annual safety inspection in spring 2012, the responsible site manager found significant cracks in the reinforced concrete. As a result, access to the tower was largely blocked. The damage was repaired and a new surface protection applied. The cost of the renovation was 250,000 euros, which was less than originally assumed. The tower was also reopened to the public earlier than expected, namely on October 25, 2013. An official reopening took place in spring 2014.
Technical
The Schwarzenberg Tower stands on a 70 cm high square platform, which can be reached on two sides via four steps each. There are extensions on the other two sides. In the tower, a left-hand staircase leads along the inner walls up to a height of around 34 m and further in the middle of the tower to the first viewing platform at a height of around 37.5 m. However, this is not accessible. This is followed by a spiral staircase with 20 steps up to the upper viewing platform at a height of around 41 m. This is round and has a diameter of a good nine meters. To reach it, a total of 241 steps have to be overcome. There is no elevator. The tower is accessible from April 1 to October 31 of each year from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Due to its height of 377 meters above sea level, the Schwarzenberg Tower has been used by several operators for radio purposes since the 1950s. Transmitting systems for police and fire brigade radio , VHF radio and mobile radio are currently installed on the top of the tower .
