The 706 m high Schwarzwihrberg is located in the southern part of the Upper Palatinate Forest near the town of Rötz in the Upper Palatinate district of Cham and, together with other elevations, represents the eastern corner of the Schwarzach mountainous region. It rises north over the valley of the Schwarzach with the Eixendorfer reservoir . The extensive ruins of the Schwarzenburg on the wooded and rocky summit of the Schlossberg, the highest elevation of the Schwarzwihrberg massif, is located about 3 km west-north-west of the city center of Rötz, 1 km west of the village of Bauhof, a district of the municipality of Rötz, or about 20 km north-west of Cham . The ruin is about 270 meters above the valley. With its extensive forests, the mountain forms its own area in the Hetzmannsdorf district of the town of Rötz.

history

The Schwarzenburg was founded in the 11th century. It was first mentioned in a document between the years 1048 and 1060 with "Heinricus de Swarcenburg", a member of an influential family of noblemen mentioned as a monastery vogt in a traditional note from the monastery of Sankt Emmeram in Regensburg . Around 1450 the castle was strengthened and around 1500 it was extended with mighty bastions and a roundabout. It was destroyed by the Swedes in 1634 during the Thirty Years War and then used as a quarry. Today the freely accessible castle ruin in the area of the outer bailey is mostly used as a grandstand for the festival taking place in the castle, in the area of the main castle there is a temporarily managed refuge with a beer garden. The accessible keep serves as a lookout tower.
