The sulfur beetle ( Cteniopus flavus , syn .: Cteniopus sulphureus ) is a beetle of the subfamily of the plant beetles (Alleculinae) within the family of the black beetles (Tenebrionidae).
features
The beetles are seven to nine millimeters long and have a strikingly sulfur-yellow color, only the antennae and their end links are darker. The species is variable, so there are specimens with almost black antennae or buttons , a brown head or abdomen, a black head or pronotum or gray-brown elytra . The head is elongated and the pronotum is only slightly wider than it is long. The body is finely haired.
Occurrence
They occur in all of Central Europe , east to Siberia . The species becomes rarer towards the north. In Germany z. B. they cannot be found in Schleswig-Holstein .
Way of life
The beetles love warmth and like to sit on plants from the umbelliferae family (Apiaceae), where they feed on pollen . The adults can be found from May to August. The larvae mostly live in sandy soils and eat roots.
