The Schelfstadt, originally the Schelfe , since 1349 also Neustadt , developed from the 11th century as an initially independent place and from 1705 as a city.

In the 18th century there was an important cattle and horse market here. There were various relaxation and accommodation facilities around the square. The square had been paved since the middle of the 18th century. In 1844 the square became a pig market. The preserved 1- and 2-storey houses were built around the square, some of which were extended a little later.

The independent Schelfstadt was combined with the old town of Schwerin in 1832. After Grand Duke Paul Friedrich moved the ducal court from Ludwigslust to Schwerin in 1837 , the city also expanded to the north. Before 1840, the gardens on Apothekerstraße extended to Pfaffenteich . Around 1970 the square still had various rectangular raised beds .

As part of urban development funding , the Schelfstadt was redeveloped . In 1994/95 the square was redeveloped at the same time as the redevelopment of all houses.

In terms of traffic , the square is opened up by bus route 11 operated by Nahverkehr Schwerin GmbH (NVS).
