The board of directors is the agricultural ethicist, journalist and management consultant Franz-Theo Gottwald . Karl Ludwig Schweisfurth's daughter Anne is the foundation's deputy chairman of the board of trustees.

From 1998 to 2002 she awarded the Schweisfurth Research Prize for Ecological Economy in cooperation with the Association for Ecological Economy . The foundation annually awards the organic food industry research prize, which awards bachelor, master and doctoral theses that offer ideas and approaches to sustainability issues in the organic food sector. The foundation has been awarding the Wolfgang Staab Nature Conservation Prize since 2015 for special achievements in favor of the sustainable development of river and floodplain landscapes. The prize is awarded annually and is endowed with 20,000 euros.

The foundation is also the sponsor of the Animal Welfare on the Plate project, which awards catering establishments, conference venues and communal catering with an animal welfare chef's hat that pay attention to the animal-friendly, ecological origin of ingredients of animal origin.

In 2002, the founders Karl Ludwig Schweisfurth, Franz-Theo Gottwald and Meinolf Dierkes wrote the model of agricultural and food culture, which also serves as the conceptual background for the foundation's work.
