The sword-leaved torch lily ( Kniphofia ensifolia ) is a species of the genus of torch lilies ( Kniphofia ) in the subfamily of the Affodill family (Asphodelaceae).
features
The sword-leaved torch lily is a vigorous, perennial , herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 60 to 200 centimeters. It forms a rhizome . The gray-blue leaves are finely toothed and 15 to 35 millimeters wide. The inflorescence measures 9 to 20 × 4 centimeters and is densely cylindrical. The buds are pale red to red-green in color. The flowers are white to greenish-white, more rarely yellowish, and 15 to 20 millimeters long.
The flowering period is likely to be from August to September.
Occurrence
The sword-leaved torch lily occurs in southern Africa on brook banks and on black, loamy swampy soil.
Systematics
One can distinguish between two subspecies:
- Kniphofia ensifolia subsp. autumnalis Codd : It occurs only in the South African province of Free State .
- Kniphofia ensifolia subsp. ensifolia : It is more common in South Africa.
use
The sword-leaved torch lily is rarely used as an ornamental plant. The species has been in culture since 1786 at the latest.
