Habitat and Ecology

Scinax alter is an open land species found in grasslands and on pastures. These anuras are found in vegetation that hangs over stagnant water. Spawning waters can be both temporary and permanent.

Danger

The IUCN lists Scinax as " Least Concern ". Its widespread distribution and the fact that the species adopts a wide range of habitats, the overall population shows a stable trend and is estimated to be sufficiently large, explain this. The processors consider it unlikely that stocks of the species can decline quickly enough to justify a higher endangerment level. In addition, the species occurs in its range in many protected areas and there are no known special reasons for endangerment.

Systematics and taxonomy

Like most species of buck-toed tree frogs, Scinax was first placed in the genus Hyla . There it was regarded as a subspecies of the red knick-toed tree frog (then Hyla rubra ). Later the genus Hyla was split and the species came to the genus Ololygon . After the priority of the name Scinax over the name Ololygon published in the same year had emerged, all frogs belonging to this genus were given the generic name Scinax .
