The neotropical Froschlurch Scinax juncae belongs to the subfamily scinax (Scinaxinae) within the family of tree frogs . Within the genus Scinax , the species belongs to the Scinax ruber clade and the Scinax ruber group. This species was only newly described in 2010 on the basis of an individual collected in 2007 in the "Reserva Ecológica da Michelin" (Igrapiúna municipality, Bahia , Brazil ). The epithet honors Dr. Flora Acuña Juncá for her studies on Brazilian amphibians .

distribution

The species is endemic to southeastern Brazil and so far only known from three localities in southern Bahia (in the communities Boa Nova, Jussari and Igrapiúna) and one in northeastern Minas Gerais (community Salto da Divisa). All sites are between 0 and 400 m above sea level. NN. Santana et al. (2009) reported a new find and a related (disjoint) expansion of the known area of Scinax auratus in Salto da Divisa. But this was probably a wrong determination. Nunes & Pombal Jr. (2010) identified that in Santana et al. (2009) pictured individual as Scinax juncae .

description

Scinax juncae is a medium-sized knick-toed tree frog. The males measured by Nunes & Pombal Jr. (2010) have a head-trunk length of 23 to 27.1 mm. On the green-brown back coloration, the species has a pattern of dorsolateral yellowish stripes, as well as an interocular yellow transversal stripe. The belly is cream-colored, the back, thighs and feet are dotted with black, the inside of the thighs and the groin are marbled in black. The iris is brown-beige. From the dorsal point of view, the muzzle is round. The vocal sac is flat. Scinax juncae has a tubercle and a fold of skin on the foot. The four to five-note callers of the males also distinguish the species from others. Pictures and drawings can be found in the first description by Nunes & Pombal Jr. (2010).

Nunes & Pombal Jr. (2010) compared the species with other sympatric knick-toed tree frogs of the Scinax ruber group from the Mata Atlântica of the lowlands. The species can best be distinguished from S. alter, S. auratus, S. cuspidatus, S. eurydice, S. fuscovarius and S. similis on the basis of their characteristic back markings and their yellow transversal interocular stripe.

Habitat and Ecology

Scinax juncae lives in the Mata Atlântica , but is more likely to live in open habitats, i. H. Forest edges, bound, as so far only male individuals have been found there while calling from small bushes at the edges of the pond. Otherwise, little is known about the species, e.g. B. where they prefer to reproduce and what their spawn and tadpoles look like.
