Sclerocactus wetlandicus subsp. ilseae is a subspecies of the Sclerocactus wetlandicus plant in the cactus family(Cactaceae). English common names are "Ilse's Cactus" and "Pariette Canyon Cactus".

description

The gray to blue-green, 12 to 15-ribbed plant body is spherical to flat-spherical and reaches heights of 4 to 8 cm (rarely 10 cm) and a diameter of 3 to 7 cm. It has four to five central spines , one of which is slightly curved or hooked. The 8 to 12 white to gray radial spines, which have darker tips, are 0.5 to 1.5 cm long. The plants usually grow individually. Your taproot is branched.

The funnel-shaped flowers are 1 to 1.5 cm long and 1.2 to 1.6 cm in diameter. The bracts are pink, white to yellow. The flowering period is April to May.

The spherical to elongated, reddish to brownish-gray fruits have a diameter of 6 to 12 mm and contain about 5 to 10 black, shiny, kidney-shaped, fine-black seeds that ripen within 4 to 6 weeks.

The subspecies is smaller than Sclerocactus wetlandicus subsp. wetlandicus .

distribution

Sclerocactus wetlandicus subsp. ilseae is in Uintah Basin in Duchesne County of the US state of Utah on planes or on rocky slopes at elevations from 1400 to 1600 meters endemic spread. The subspecies grows there in different types of soil and is associated with Yucca harrimaniae subsp. sterilis . The populations are limited to a few plants each. They are seriously threatened by the activities of oil companies.

Systematics

The epithet of the subspecies was chosen in honor of Ilse Hochstätter, the wife of the first descriptor. The description as Sclerocactus wetlandicus subsp. ilseae was published in 1995 by Fritz Hochstätter .

Synonyms are Sclerocactus wetlandicus var. Ilseae Hochstätter (1993, Basionym ) and Sclerocactus brevispinus K.D. Heil & JMPorter (1994).

Danger

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN the subspecies as "is Critically Endangered (CR) ", d. H. listed as critically endangered.
