Scott Turner

Scott "Scotty" Turner (born August 1931 in Sydney , Nova Scotia as Graham Morrison Turnbull ; † February 9, 2009 in Cobleskill , New York) was a Canadian songwriter and music producer.

Turner taught himself to play the guitar while at college in Iowa in 1955 when he was unable to advance his track and field ambitions due to an athletic injury. In 1956 he went to Lubbock , Texas for postgraduate studies , where he met Buddy Holly , with whom he wrote 13 songs. After two years as a guitarist in Tommy Sands ' band, he befriended Johnny O'Keefe on a trip to Australia , whose first number one hit She's My Baby he wrote and whom he brokered a contract with Liberty Records . He was then guitarist and musical director for Guy Mitchell and Eddie Fisher .

He made his first experience as a music producer with his friend Herb Alpert's A&M Records company . He then worked as a producer for Liberty and Imperial Records , producing Slim Whitman's albums and directing sessions for Roy Clark , Vickie Carr , Del Reeves , Rosemary Clooney , Jerry Wallace and Jimmy Bryant . In 1962 he discovered Harry Nilsson and used him as a singer in a demo recording session.

Turner wrote over 400 songs, including with John Marascalco , Audie Murphy , Doc Pomus , Tommy Sands, Buddy Holly and Guy Mitchell, which have been recorded by many well-known performers, including Dean Martin , Charley Pride , Gene Vincent , Wanda Jackson and many more .
