The development of a light, fast half-track vehicle began in the early 1930s on behalf of the Reichswehr at Deutsche Maschinenbau AG ( DEMAG in Wetter (Ruhr) ). This was from the outset as a traction means for light artillery pieces such as the 2-cm-Flak 30 (or 2-cm-Flak 38 ) or 7.5-cm light infantry cannon 18 as well as the 3.7 cm Pak 36 planned and should can also transport the gun crew.

Due to the successful prototype at the demonstration , Demag was assigned the development of the series model in 1934. This lasted until 1937, production began in the same year with the type D6 (Demag 6), which was built until 1938. After that, from the same year only the type D7 with the 90 HP engine and from 1940 with the 100 HP engine was manufactured. In its final version, the vehicle could carry eight soldiers.

Demag was the only manufacturer until 1939, after which other companies were added as licensees . These goods:

A special feature of the Sd.Kfz. 10 is the low rolling resistance , which is only 5% higher than that of a four-wheeled vehicle. The maximum speed of 65 km / h is therefore a high value for tracked vehicles.

The semi-automatic Maybach -Variorex preselector with seven forward and three reverse gears was very modern for the time and easy to use. The engine and gearbox were characterized by great reliability .

In 1939 the Sd.Kfz. 10 Version D7 of the light armored personnel carrier Sd.Kfz. 250 derived. Around 1939, 12 D7 units were sold to Sweden , and 142 10.5 cm light field howitzers 18 came there between 1939 and 1944 and could be towed with the vehicle.

The le. Zgkw. 1 t was widely used by the Wehrmacht on all fronts during the Second World War . Some vehicles were handed over to the allied army of the Kingdom of Romania and subsequently used mainly on the Eastern Front to pull their own guns.

A total of around 17,500 copies of both versions were produced from 1937 to 1944.
