The container ships of Sealand New York type were built in South Korea for several shipping companies.
history
The series developed by the shipbuilding company Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan was delivered to the relevant customer in 2000. The eponymous Sealand New York was handed over to the Athens shipping company Costamare in 2000 as the first of a series of five . This was followed by alternating other Costamare units that were chartered out to Maersk , eight units for the Swiss Mediterranean Shipping Company and finally a ship for the Glückstadt shipping company Wulff.
description
The ships are part of the Post-Panamax container ships, the superstructure of which is approximately four fifths of the length aft. The ships have eight cargo holds equipped with cell guides , six of which are in front of and two behind the deck structure and are closed by three pontoon hatch covers arranged next to one another . In terms of shipbuilding, the design developed in cooperation with Germanischer Lloyd is carried out without longitudinal walls. The advantages of the new design lie in the larger cargo space and the reduced construction costs. In this way, 14 rows of containers can be stowed side by side and nine layers on top of each other in the holds . In addition to the transport of the usual 20 and 40-foot containers, it is also possible to stow extra-long 45-foot containers on deck. The total capacity is 6250 TEU , of which 3130 TEU can be stowed in the holds and 3120 TEU on deck. In later constructions, the maximum capacity increased to up to 6700 TEU. There are 500 connections for refrigerated containers . Cargo holds 1 to 5 are designed for the transport of dangerous cargo of SOLAS classes 8 and 2.
The main motor used acts directly on a fixed propeller, the tips of which have been given a profile that is supposed to reduce cavitation . The on-board energy is provided by an auxiliary diesel and an emergency diesel. The ships are equipped with a bow thruster to support the docking and casting off maneuvers . The underwater hull of the units is provided with a self-polishing antifouling and the ballast water tanks have sacrificial anodes to prevent corrosion.
