Sean Michael Elliott (born February 2, 1968 in Tucson , Arizona ) is a retired American basketball player who was active in the NBA with the San Antonio Spurs and the Detroit Pistons .
Career
Elliott played basketball at Cholla High School in Tucson before going baskets for the University of Arizona . For his performance in the fourth and final season at the university, he even won the nationwide Wooden Award for best college player. As a college player, he also won the 1986 World Basketball Championship.
Elliott was selected in the 1989 NBA draft in third place in the first round by the San Antonio Spurs , for which he was active for most of his NBA career. For his first year accomplishments, Elliott was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team . Only the 1993/94 season he played for the Detroit Pistons after he moved to Detroit on October 1, 1993 together with David Wood in exchange for Dennis Rodman and Isaiah Morris. The Pistons originally intended to give him to the Houston Rockets in February 1994 . However, this change did not materialize because Elliott did not pass the health check at the Houston Rockets. After the season in Detroit he then moved back to the San Antonio Spurs in exchange for the draft rights to Bill Curley and the right to a second-round draft pick.
In the 1998/99 season , Sean Elliott was a key contributor to the Spurs in San Antonio's NBA championship win.
Elliot had kidney surgery on August 16, 1999. He received a kidney from his brother Noel. On March 13, 2000, he played for the first time after the operation again for the Spurs and with this game against the Atlanta Hawks became the first player to return to the NBA after a kidney transplant . Alonzo Mourning succeeded in doing this later in 2004.
In 2001, Sean Elliott retired from professional basketball. When he resigned, he was the club leader of the Spurs for converted and attempted three-point throws (563 of 1485 threesomes). It now ranks 5th in this category. In his career, he averaged 14.2 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game.
During the 2003/04 season he analyzed basketball games for NBC , ABC and ESPN television channels . He has been a commentator for Spurs on local broadcasts since the 2004/05 season .
On March 6, 2005, Elliott's jersey number "32" was withdrawn from the game by the Spurs and the jersey was symbolically hung on the ceiling of the AT&T Center , the home of the San Antonio Spurs. The shirt number "32" is no longer given in his honor. He was inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame as a player in 2018 .
