Career
society
Sean St. Ledger played in the youth of Peterborough United and moved to the first team of the English third division team at the age of 17. It took him two years to try, in which he hardly got a chance, until he was finally able to establish himself as a regular on the defensive in 2004.
2006 St. Ledger moved to the second division Preston North End . There, too, he was able to maintain a position in the regular eleven. In his third year he played all 46 league games of the 2008/09 season and also scored five goals as a defender. That year, the club reached the promotion play-offs, but missed promotion to the Premier League .
The following year he was loaned from the seventh match day to league rivals Middlesbrough FC , but returned to Preston for the second half of the season. He then stayed for another year with the northern English club until it was relegated in 2011.
St. Ledger then moved to Leicester City . At the beginning of the 2011/12 season, the central defender still had problems finding his way into the team, but in the second half of the season he was regularly on the starting line-up. After the 2013/2014 season, his contract was no longer renewed and was therefore initially without a club. On November 27, 2014, St. Ledger moved to Ipswich Town . However, he did not play a game for the team and was released from the club on December 29, 2014.
After a successful trial with Major League Soccer - franchise Orlando City , he moved on 5 March 2015 this team.
National team
After the very successful 2008/09 season, the Irish national coach Giovanni Trapattoni became aware of Sean St. Ledger. St. Ledger was born in England, but is eligible to play for the Republic of Ireland due to Irish ancestry. On May 29, 2009 he was used for the first time in the Irish national team in a friendly against Nigeria. He then played four games in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup . In the game against the highly favored Italians, he gave Ireland a 2-1 lead with his first international goal in the 87th minute, the game ended 2-2.
After the World Cup was missed, he remained a regular in Irish central defense and played nine games in the following European Championship qualification , including the two play-off games against Estonia, in which the Irish secured participation. At the end of May 2012 he was appointed to Ireland's EM squad .
On June 10, 2012, St. Ledger scored the interim 1: 1 equalization in the game against Croatia (1: 3) at the European Football Championship in Poznan and thus the first goal for the Irish at a European Football Championship since 1988.
