Sebastian Bakare (* 1940 in Southern Rhodesia ) is a Zimbabwean Anglican clergyman and university professor . He was bishop of Manicaland from 1999 to 2006 and diocesan administrator ( caretaker bishop ) of Harare from 2007 to 2009 .

Life

Sebastian Bakare was ordained a priest in Lusaka in 1963 after studying theology . He worked in the Diocese of Zambia before going to Westhill College of Education in Birmingham for two years . From 1969 to 1971 he was Education Officer for the Diocese of Zambia. During the Rhodesia conflict he went to Germany as a persecuted by the Smith regime , where he worked as a university teacher and then as a pastor of the Protestant parish in Gelsenkirchen-Schalke . 1980 to 1982 he continued his studies in Berkeley up to the MA degree. He then became pastor of the All-Souls Church in Mount Pleasant, Harare . From 1984 to 1986 he worked for the Zimbabwean Ecumenical Council of Churches as a consultant for urban and rural missions and was given a teaching and pastoral assignment at the University of Zimbabwe . From 1986 to 1999 he was Senior Ecumenical Chaplain there . From 1988 to 1991 he also completed a doctorate in Berkeley, which he completed with a Doctor of Ministry .

In 1999 Bakare became Bishop of Manicaland Diocese in eastern Zimbabwe. He held the office until his retirement in 2006. After two years as a Senior Lecturer at the Africa University in Mutare , the Dean of the Anglican Ecclesiastical Province of Central Africa made him temporarily head of the Diocese of Harare in November 2007 . The background was the political conflict about the increasingly authoritarian rule of Robert Mugabe . This was unconditionally supported by the bishop of Harare Nolbert Kunonga ; At the same time, Kunonga opposed what he believed to be the overly tolerant attitude of the leadership of the Church Province of Central Africa to homosexuality . This led to an inner-Anglican division and to sometimes violent state repression against people and communities who rejected Kunonga's course and demanded his resignation. Kunonga was removed from office and excommunicated in 2008 , but did not give up his right to the office of bishop even after Bakare was appointed. Bakare played a key role in pacifying the political and ecclesiastical situation. In July 2009, Chad Nicholas Gandiya was elected as the new diocesan bishop. At the end of 2012, Harare's Anglican Cathedral, which had been closed for five years, reopened.

Sebastian Bakare was awarded the Swedish Per Anger Prize in 2008 .

He is married to Ruth Bakare geb. Büchsel. The couple has three daughters.
