Sebastian Burger (* 1980 in Magdeburg ) is a German painter .

Career

Sebastian Burger began studying graphics and printmaking at the Vienna Art School in Vienna in 2001 . From 2003 to 2009 he studied at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig , from 2005 in the painting class with Neo Rauch . He graduated with a diploma in 2009. From 2010 to 2012 he was a master student with Neo Rauch. From 2012 to 2013 he received a working grant from the Konrad Adenauer Foundation . He lives and works in Leipzig .

Sebastian Burger is an artist from the New Leipzig School who has returned to figurative painting. His works include small paintings and drawings as well as large-format pictures in oil on canvas, oil on paper or oil on wood. Burger's pictures show people, animals, legendary figures and other mysterious figures in mostly strange surroundings. They are peppered with ironic allusions to German painting of the 19th century, surrealism and fantasy.

With his pictures Sebastian Burger gives a glimpse into a world made up of shaped pieces and fragments that do not belong to each other, but which can be observed on their way to each other. The graphic appropriation of the world surpasses the purely narrative dimension and finds attitude and impression. The dedicated recourse to romantic pictorial constellations, ghostly fables and grotesque anecdotes, reads in not a few of Burger's works as a well-considered commentary on the heated discourses of the present.
