Sebastian Posch

Sebastian Posch (born July 27, 1936 in Angath ) is an Austrian classical philologist .

Life

Sebastian Posch comes from Tyrol . He attended elementary school in Brixen im Thale and then the Archbishop's Gymnasium Borromäum in Salzburg . He passed his Matura with distinction. He first studied theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, but changed university and subject in the following year: He went to the University of Innsbruck and studied classical philology with a scholarship from the Tyrolean State Memorial Foundation. Before graduating, he worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Classical Philology.

In his dissertation, Posch examined the theocrit reception in Virgil . The work was supervised by Wolf Steidle and Robert Muth and, after its publication (1969), was positively received by experts. She earned Posch the doctorate sub auspiciis praesidentis rei publicae Austriacae (1966).

After completing his doctorate, Posch stayed at the University of Innsbruck. He worked as an assistant at the Institute for Classical Philology. From 1971 he was together with Robert Muth editor of the Scoreboard for Classical Studies , since 1987 sole editor. Since 2001 he has had a second editor at his side.

In February 1982 Posch completed his habilitation with a thesis on Ovid's Tristien . In 1991 he received the title of full professor. In October 1997 he was appointed associate professor. Since 1997 he has also been the editor of the Commentationes Aenipontanae series , in which the first works of the Innsbruck graduates appear. Posch retired in October 2001.

In September 2008 Posch received the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, 1st Class, “in recognition of his services to the Tyrolean science landscape” .
