The Sebastianskirche is a Catholic church in Ingolstadt , which was built as a plague church. It is dedicated to Saint Sebastian , the patron saint against the plague. Today the church belongs as a branch church to the parish of St. Moritz .

history

The oldest part of the church dates from the late 15th century, when the church was built in the late Gothic style with a pointed hood , as can be seen on the city model by Jakob Sandtner from 1572. Around 1634/35 the nave of the church was lengthened by a yoke under the direction of the city mason, Jakob Gigl . The church, around which a plague cemetery was laid out, was expanded due to a vow made by the Ingolstadt city council during the Thirty Years War in September 1634, when the plague was particularly rampant in the city. Also in the Baroque style , the church tower was equipped with an onion dome in 1674 . Due to the secularization , the Sebastianskirche was threatened with demolition, but could be acquired by the Sebastian Brotherhood Ingolstadt in 1804 and renovated in 1834. Between 1986 and 1989 the Sebastianskirche was last extensively restored.

Furnishing

High altar of the Sebastianskirche

During restoration work in 1957, numerous wall paintings from the 16th century, including a depiction of the Descent from the Cross from 1547, were uncovered. The baroque furnishings of the Sebastianskirche come mainly from the master carpenter Ulrich Lempp and the sculptor Hans Stelzer , who among other things created the statues of the high altar . In addition, 16 epitaphs are still preserved on the inner and outer walls of the church.

circle of friends

At the beginning of 2009 the Freundeskreis Sebastianskirche Ingolstadt eV was founded. Its goals are, on the one hand, to maintain and supplement the church's equipment, and on the other hand, the members want to make the church better known among the population.
