The moths reach a wingspan of 36 to 38 millimeters. The name is given by the six lines on the red-brown colored forewings. This makes the species unmistakable. Ring and kidney defects appear in the basic color and are thinly bordered, in between a dark middle shadow can sometimes be seen. The outer hem usually also stands out darker. The hind wings are unmarked dark gray and somewhat darkened towards the edge.

The yellowish white egg is barrel-shaped, rounded on the top, flat at the base and provided with numerous strong ribs.

Adult caterpillars are greenish-gray or gray-brown in color and show a thin, whitish topline, light side ridge lines bordered by black and broad, darker side stripes.

The yellow-brown doll is identified by two curved thorns on the cremaster .
