action

In Svalbard , Norway , 1000 kilometers from the North Pole , a seed vault is inaugurated with which scientists want to secure global biodiversity in the long term. It is said to be the safest building of its kind in the world. Resistant to natural disasters, climate changes and even nuclear wars, seed samples from all over the world will soon be stored here and ensure the continued existence of biodiversity.

In Kenya , Zachary Muthamia, director of the national gene bank, will be accompanied. He uses the few means available to him to secure the biodiversity of his country and to prepare copies of Kenya's plant genetic material for transport to Norway. In Nairobi , Marianne Bänziger, a leading maize expert from CIMMYT , wants to use crossbreeding to develop a non-genetically modified seed that will yield a 20-30% higher crop yield than today's seeds and that will withstand the drought.
