The Wenzendorf glider airfield is a glider airfield 10 km west of Buchholz in the Nordheide in Lower Saxony .

geography

The airfield is located immediately west of the Harburg Mountains and the Lüneburg Heath as a whole, about 10 kilometers west of the city of Buchholz at 66 m above sea level. MSL . It occupies an area of around 54,500 m².

The area is a good for North German conditions starting point for cross country flying is because the thermals strong field of Lüneburg Heath is directly south.

History of the airfield

The airfield is located on the northwestern edge of the former Wenzendorf plant , a hexagonal area approx. 1000 m wide. The Hamburg aircraft manufacturer built the Messerschmitt Me 262 on the site in the 1930s and 1940s . The plant was completely dismantled after the war. In the 1950s, glider operations began on the northwestern edge of the former site.

Flight operations

The Airbus HFB Fluggemeinschaft eV is at home on the airfield. She operates several gliders and a motor glider there .

The flying season usually starts at the beginning of April and ends at the end of October. Flight operations take place on Saturday, Sunday and on public holidays. In the two weeks before Pentecost, flight operations also take place during the week.

Allowed launch types are winch launch and self launch .

Due to the thermally favorable location, distance gliding flights are regularly undertaken from Wenzendorf . In the last few years the 500 km and once even the 600 km limit has been broken several times.
