Seixas ( IPA : [ sɘiʃaʃ ]) is a town and municipality in northern Portugal .
history
The first documented mention of the place comes from the year 1071, from a deed of gift from the Galician King D. Garcia to D. Jorge, the bishop of Tui . Probably the later first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques , gave Seixas the first city rights before the independence of the Kingdom of Portugal in 1139 . However, the document was destroyed in a city fire and has not been preserved, and so the document of the renewed city rights by King D. Afonso III is valid . from 1262 as the first town charter of the place. As an independent municipality, Seixas has been in the registers since 1156, but still belonged to the diocese of Tui on the other side of the Portuguese border, as was the case in the royal surveys of 1258. Only under Diogo de Sousa, who was Archbishop of Braga from 1514 to 1532 , became the entire Minho and thus also Seixas assigned to the Archdiocese of Braga, and so finally also ecclesiastically assigned to Portugal, to which it belonged politically since the establishment of the empire.
